National Geographic Pristine Seas has released a first-of-its-kind study to measure the full economic value of bottom trawling in Europe’s waters.

The data indicate that the destructive fishing practice imposes up to €16 billion in net costs to society annually, which is 90 times the €180 million in profits the fishing industry takes in each year.
